3 Organization Mistakes To Avoid

Spread the love

You know when you walk into a room and you think, “OMG, this place is making me crazy!”

So you group things up, stack them, shuffle them around and rearrange everything in the room – so it’s all “organized.”

Yet you wonder why it’s a disaster again in just a matter of hours.

Now you know that’s really not organizing. It’s just taking the stuff you have (that’s misplaced or needs to be eliminated) and simply rearranging it back into the same space.

Instead you should take the time to ask yourself questions about each item and think about its purpose and meaningfulness to you.

Doing that rearranging stuff is just a mistake. (But one that happens to everyone…all the time).

And since you’ve read this far, you’re gonna love today’s episode on three other organizing mistakes.

And if you nod your head during any of them, please let me know about it down in the comments. Motivate others and inspire yourself to avoid these organization faux pas in the future.

Alrighty sweet friend. Thank you for your ongoing awesomeness. I hope you know how much you’re appreciated and loved.

Can’t wait to see you again next week with another tip to live simple and happy.

Xo,
Mridu

My big nono was buying storage containers! Hey everyone was doing it! Lol I did find them homes…just not in my home. Turns out once I decluttered I didn’t need them!!!

I so hear you about this Susan. I’ve had to donate so many but am holding on to a few that I keep mixing and matching. Thanks for joining the conversation. 🙂 xo, mridu

I can say I tend to over plan and like to write project lists down to the smallest detail, just to procrastinate☺️I need to practice baby steps.

Amisha

I am in the habit of thinking so much and try to do all the stuff in a single go 😉 Now i know i need to go for baby steps. I am definitely going to try it.

You had to be watching as I over thought every downsizing project in my home. Thank you for pushing me back into reality and getting me jumpstarted. You have been an invaluable source of practical information as I am nearing the end of downsizing a home.

Dyan, you are not alone! I do anything to procrastinate certain tasks or projects….and over-detailing is one of them. So much easier to just bite the bullet and get going. Lets keep each other in check, shall we? 🙂 xo, m

I swear every single time I’ve been overwhelmed is because I’ve been focusing on the big picture (which is scary!) instead of the little pieces. To continuously learning!
Great to hear from you Amisha. 🙂 xo, mridu

I always buy things because their on sale or cute! I usually find a use for them though:)

Over planning is my delaying tactic – which I do by searching on the internet or in books for “better” tips before I do anything. Before I know it, hours have passed by. What works best for me is to make a simple list and get going on it. I can also relate to continually rearranging and shuffling the same old stuff – why bother. Thanks Mridu for the reminders and insights.

I can relate to buying storage bins and having them become clutter. I finally decided to not only stop buying them, but also when I de-clutter an area – I now de-clutter to the point where I can also get rid of the current storage bin the stuff was in. The room looks neater without the storage bins. Thanks for your tips!

Hey Crazy Pants! What do you do, follow me around? I’m guilty of every thing in this video; don’t need an excuse to procrastinate– bought stuuuuff to organize jewelry which is now part of the clutter. Sooooo happy we found each other. My life literally gets better each time I use one of your suggestions (i.e, how to fold t-shirts) my husband loves his dresser drawers too. I thank you for YOUR ongoing awesomness. Keep up your great energy. My next project, make a big job into little ones I can handle w/o getting overwhelmed. Thanks Mridu

Hmmmm…you’re one of the lucky ones then. Most of us buy without a purpose and then end up with random extras. Don’t get me wrong, I love cute and sale things. Just beware! LOL! 🙂 xo, Mridu

Oh girl, the internet can be such a procrastination tool! Literally infinite information! OMG – who can resist? 😉 But thanks for sharing your idea of keeping a simple list. Keep you on track and gets you going. Awesome Janet! xo, mridu

Fantastic ideas Colette. It’s so true. If you leave empty bins lying around, they become “clutter housing” – so best to get rid of them too. Thanks so much for sharing! xo, m

Thank you, thank you friend!! Love keeping each other inspired and motivated. 🙂 Yes, small, bite-size pieces of a project is key to actually getting things done. So appreciate your support and enthusiasm. Smooches! -m

Mrido,
It makes so much sense not to go out and buy a lot of containers until you see what you need ! The good news that goes along with that is you may not need as many because you have decluttered significantly enough as to not need them ! I appreciate that concept ! Thank you very much !!

Mridu Parikh

You’re so right Dal! 😉 LOVE the logic! Less stuff = less bins. 🙂 Thanks for hanging with me here. xo, mridu

A little late in answering this. When I 1st started to organize I was guilty of all three mistakes. As I’ve been decluttering, I find I don’t need so many containers but when I do, I shop from my empty supply on hand. One thing I’ve found is my system keeps changing the more I declutter and I’m not needing to store and organize as much. Still have a long way to go but the baby steps are paying off.

Mridu

I LOVE that you said you “shop from your supply.” That’s awesome! And you’re right, the more you declutter, the more storage inventory you have and the less you need to purchase new storage. Thrilled to hear you’re decluttering is going well. Baby steps rock!! xo, m
